NFF contacts agents over friendlies for Eagles
From Ezeocha Nzeh, Abuja
FOLLOWING the Angola 2010 Africa Cup of Nations draws that pitched Nigeria against defending champion, Egypt; Mozambique and Benin Republic in Group C, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has contacted its consultants to begin search for strong opponents for friendly matches that would help team prepare adequately for the continent's biggest soccer fiesta.
Chairman of NFF Technical Committee, Taiwo Ogunjobi, revealed yesterday that the NFF had been working hard to ensure that the Eagles were put in proper shape since the country picked a surprise qualifying ticket for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa and Angola respectively.
He disclosed that the NFF had contacted its agents to secure quality international friendly matches, especially against tough African countries, since the Nations Cup is holding first and the opponents are drawn from Africa. According to Ogunjobi, the country's qualification for the World Cup would encourage many countries to play international friendlies with the Super Eagles.
He said the federation would utilise the opportunities if any country showed interest, adding that countries such as Brazil, England, and Spain were eager to engage Nigeria in friendlies as preparation for the World Cup, which is holding in Africa for the very first time.
Ogunjobi also disclosed that the NFF Technical Committee would meet with the technical crew today to fashion out the way forward for the national team. The Guardian learnt that the embattled coach would also know his fate tomorrow when the NFF board meets to deliberate on the proposals the technical committee would submit to it, having met with Amodu and his technical crew.
A source also revealed that the NFF board would deliberate on the performance of the Eaglets at the just concluded FIFA U-17 World Cup as well as ratify the choice of the team's coach, John Obuh, as new coach of the U-20 team.
