THE newly elected President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Prince Miaphen has condemned the activities of his predecessors whom he said have been enmeshed in partisan politics.
According to Miaphen, the body will now decentralize and relocate the national Secretariat of NANS from Abuja back to Zonal campuses, to remove it from the grip of hungry politicians who want to use the students’ body to achieve their selfish objectives.
The newly elected National Executive of NANS has also condemned in strong terms, the activities of the Boko Haram terrorist group and other armed militants, urging its members to rethink and retract their steps. Miaphen, who spoke during a press conference in Jos, the Plateau State last Monday, also commended the efforts of security apparatus in frustrating the activities of terrorist groups especially during the recent Christmas and New Year celebrations charged them to continue to be proactive
The student body also called on the Federal Government to be decisive in tackling corruption in governance and other places.
Miaphen further lamented that the students’ body had lost real touch with its grassroots because the organization, over the years had become immersed in Abuja affairs, with most of the past presidents lobbying and doing the biddings of political elite.
He added that this detachment of the body from campuses had created a leeway for campuses and cultism and other social vices to thrive on various campuses across the country.
His words: “The power of NANS as a union has lost its glory and the organization has lost its real touch with the grassroots. We also pledge to restructure the body and relocate the NANS secretariat from the streets and confines of Abuja back to the campuses where it was originally designed to function.”
The NANS president who further decried the progressive decay of structures and facilities in tertiary institutions in the country, said the situation calls for seriousness. He urges the federal government to ensure that institutions are upgraded to meet contemporary standards in terms of infrastructure and facilities.
