Damp-1

THE rains are here again in full force and it is time to pay attention to those things or places around the home that are prone to dampness during the season. This is important because spotting any such problems will help to remedy them quickly.

Damp can cause mould on walls and furniture and make window frames rot. Cold housing encourages the growth of mould and mites, as mites feed on moulds and can aggravate the risk of respiratory illnesses in some people. In addition, the property affected by damp feels and looks cold and unappealing.

In many cases, damp can be unknowingly encouraged due to poor maintenance. Damp can be in or around the roof, walls, floors, windows, doors or pipe-work on any property.

There are several causes of dampness in the home. These include water soaking up through porous materials into the floors and walls of the property. It could manifest in walls feeling damp and cold to the touch, or if there is distinguishing mark on the inside walls. Internal decorations like carpets can become stained and damaged, and cause mould and bacterial growth. Plaster can become loose.

Treating the cause of damp and mould growth conditions will check the problem. Also, ventilate the home to get rid of excess moisture and prevent musty smell.
