LAST Thursday was a very glamorous one at the Eko Hotel and Suites as popular fashion designer Folake Majin and her two daughters Gogo and Patigi Majin, who are also designers, dazzled with their separate collections at the Schon Afrique fashion show.
Powered by MTN, the second edition of the charity fashion show in support of the Sickle Cell Foundation featured Folake Majin’s Diamond Collection, GM4FM’s Earth Collection by Gogo Majin and the Midnight Rainbow Collection by Miss Majin.
Patigi opened the show with her Rainbow Collection of clothes detailed and embellished with the rainbow colour palettes. She says of her collection: A rainbow, which has been described as one of the most spectacular light shows, is one of my favourite things. The traditional description of a rainbow is that it is made up of seven colours, however, the rainbow is actually a continuum of colours from red to violet and even beyond the colours that the eyes can see.”
“A rainbow is a source of hope and inspiration after the darkest rainstorm and a true beauty of the horizon. I’ve always loved spotting a rainbow in the sky and I’ve always wanted to spot one at midnight. This reality and fantasy have inspired my current collection,” she declared.
Next on the catwalk was the GM4FM Earth Collection that played with different rich fabrics and creative colour blocks.
Gogo said: “The inspiration for the earth collection came from some of my favourite elements and experiences on the earth and mother Nature. These elements inspired the cut, colours and choice of fabric. Her collection was a mix of girly structured but feminine and womanly pieces in fabrics such as Duchess satin, African print, silk chiffon, leather and old vintage Aso-oke.
Lastly came the Diamond Collection by Folake Majin, which are mostly evening pieces meant to dazzle in the night.
The Schon Afrique Creative Director said of her collection: “The Diamond Collection is not just about the bling factor, it’s about beautiful clothes that endure and stand the test of time. It is the forever factor, the cut, the fit and the integrity of the design.
And she did not disappoint with her beautiful collection that also included a special dress for the MTN- a lovely floaty yellow dress for the major sponsor of the show. Other sponsors included the Nigerian Maritime Administration Safety Agency (NIMASA), Channels TV, TW Magazine and a host of others.
The essence of the show was not lost as it was dedicated to people suffering from sickle cell anemia. In a show interspersed with poetry and drama Ifueko Fex Ogbomo popularly known as Lady InspiroLogos, an inspirational speaker and performance poet, who is an advocate for the prevention of the sickle cell disease, rendered a beautiful musical poetry on the pains and aspirations of those living with the disease who never give up on life.
The electric fashion show that capped major fashion events last year was, indeed, one of the top moments of fashion in 2012.
