THE harmattan is prevailing in several parts of the country now. This dry and dusty weather can cause leather furniture to contract, crack and flake. Even wooden items, especially those that are not made with good quality wood may also come under the harsh influence of the weather.  When this happens, the look and functionality of the item may be affected. Yet, leather can still retain the classy look and allure associated with it, even under the weather.

Leather sofas have become very attractive to many homeowners in recent times. They make gorgeous and luxurious presentation in their various shapes, sizes and colour. Warding off any effect of excessive dryness caused by harmattan on leather can be achieved just by paying attention to its care.

It is necessary to realise that leather is a used product; it has been extracted from an animal that was once the original owner until it got to be used to make furniture. It should therefore not be surprising that leather tears and cracks during this period.

Leather dries out over time. Sunlight, perspiration humidity and other conditions of the environment adversely affect it. Tiny cracks in the leather and dye are manifestations of dryness. Continuous drying of leather can lead to bigger cracks. In extreme condition of dryness, the tendency is for the leather to become brittle and crack into pieces.

To preserve it, maintenance and care specialists in leather products during the cleaning process can do moisturising of the leather. This is one treatment that will prevent it from being completely knocked down by the weather. The moisture replacement will help give it lasting age in addition to making the furniture look good once again.

Being a natural product, reasonable care should be given to leather during normal usage. Dust frequently to prevent clogging the pores. Wipe excess liquid and spills with absorbent cloth.  Do not use soap or soak the stain heavily with water because this may cause more damage than the stain itself.

Do not expose leather to sunlight to avoid loss of colour. Ensure that the right cleaning solution is used because some chemicals can remove the natural oils in leather.
