ARCHBISHOP of Owerri Ecclesiastic Province, Dr. Anthony J. V. Obinna, has decried the about N2 billion Nigeria spent on the recent 2012 London Olympic games without clinching any category of medal in the international competition.
Addressing journalists on Wednesday in Owerri, Obinna also used his capacity as the head of the province in donating an espanse of sports land to help prepare sports men and women for the Brazillian Olympics in the next four years.
Said he: “It is painful that after spending about N2 billion to the Olympic games in London, Nigeria did not come back with any gold. In four years, Olympic in Brazil, we must be restructured. I donate a sports land at the back of the cathedral for the promotion of sports.” He said.
He regretted that instead of early preparation for such games, Nigeria worshipped money and crimes everywhere, calling for check.
Obinna recalled how he played Chase effectively, leading him to Equatorial Guinea in 1967 and football in Spain in 1978 as a midfielder.
The cleric urged sports persons to avail themselves and indeed Nigerians the opportunity of the advantage of the sports arena he donated on behalf of the Archdiocese for the betterment of the country.
