EMINENT socialites and corporate high fliers converged on Silverbird Galleria, Vitoria Island on Thursday, March 29 for the premiere of In our Ghetto, a high-end fashion short film on empowerment and youth re-orientation by Kinabuti.

Shot in the waterfronts of Rivers State by international filmmaker, Marcus Werner Hed and documentary photographers, Bruno Zanzottera and Massimo Sciacca, the docu-reel unveils the abundance of talent in the ghettos, waiting to be harnessed.

The tale was inspired by the high-spirited women of Bundu Waterside, Eleme, Marine Base Waterside and Igbikisikalama.

The film follows the lives and works of three of the Kinabuti’s In Our Ghetto models, documenting their transformation as they move from their challenging background to follow their dreams in the fashion and modeling world.

KINABUTI is a Nigerian based fashion label created by Italian designer and entrepreneur, Caterina Bortolussi and her friend, Francessca Rosset. Kinabuti label as an ethically driven collection fuses elements of Africa’s vibrant colour traditional clothing with the eclectic spirit of European contemporary design.

According to Caterina, “our aim is to use fashion as a vehicle through the Kinabuti brand to promote art and creativity among underprivileged communities, opening a door of opportunity for the younger generation by inspiring them to re-mold their future with a sense of fresh hope and wider horizons in a world beyond the streets of the ghettos.”

IN producing the Kinabuti brand, “we use fabrics and trimmings that are sourced globally, enabling us to bring together different international colours, designs and viewpoints in beautiful harmonious clothes, which embody the spirit of Kinabuti. The spirit of Kinabuti is the melding together of global inspiration, design and production for the greater good of our community.”

On the choice of Port Harcourt for the making of the fashion documentary, Catherina says, “it is not by chance we choose Port Harcourt; people’s perception of the city, locally and internationally is that of a city with security issues and overshadowed by other realities. We looked at the lively and resilient population, who remain jovial, spirited and hopeful despite their daily challenges.”

GUESTS at the premiere include Tonye Cole, co-founder, Sahara Group and The Nehemiah Project; UBA deputy managing director, Kennedy Uzoka and the bank’s group company secretary, Bili A. Odum;  Nduka Obaigbena, publisher, Thisday; Alex Kothoor, MD Grey Goose and Martini;  Ken Saro-Wiwa Jnr, Vanessa Banigo, publisher, Genevieve Magazine and others.
