THE Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) has called for entries for its 2013 festival holding between November 10 and 17 in Calabar.
According to film festival’s founder, Chioma Ude, submission of films for the third edition has begun.
She said that entries could now be submitted and would be accepted up until July 30. She stated that as usual there would be four categories of films accepted into competition.
These are Features, Documentaries, Animation and Shorts. She also confirmed that details and application forms were available for download on the AFRIFF website, www.africafilmfest.org.
She announced that exciting changes had been made to the festival’s award structure.
“This year and henceforth,” she said, adding, “the awards for excellence in the four film categories at AFRIFF have been increased from five to 11. These now are Best Feature Film, Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress, all under the Feature Film category while the Documentary Film and Animation Film categories will offer awards for Best Documentary and Best Animation respectively.
The Short Film category on the other hand now offers two awards, Best Short and Best Student Short. The latter is a new award created as an incentive to students and young filmmakers aimed at recognizing and encouraging their creative expressions.
A new eclectic award called the Special Jury Award has also been instituted and will be given to the producers, in the opinion of the jury, of the most outstanding film, cutting across all the categories of movies submitted. Lastly is the Audience Choice Award, which will be given to the producer of the movie, voted as most liked, at the screenings by viewing participants at the festival.
Monetary prizes for best films in the competition will range between $2,000 - $6,000.”
Conceived by Ude, it is a world class showcase that presents a complete immersion into the world of film making with participation from local and international, actors, directors, scriptwriters, cinematographers, sound engineers, musicians, editors, light engineers, students, equipment manufacturers and businessmen.
The objectives are to develop the film industry to a level where the products compete favorably with their contemporaries all over world; provide a growth opportunity for these film industry professionals to eventually export their products to the world; facilitate access to investors, equipment, technical and skill acquisition through Festival organized fora and several capacity development workshops; complement government’s efforts at revamping small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs).
First held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in 2010, the festival is growing to become a platform for the world to zoom in on the talent and beauty of Africa.
The Festival’s programme comprises: Film screenings in cinemas, technical training series aimed at enhancing skills as well as raising local industry standards, business sessions and networking events, discussions and excursion. Rita Dominic (Nigerian actress), who has been a regular feature of the festival, is this year’s ambassador.
