AS part of activities marking the children’s day celebration, Children were treated to a day of fun and merriment by MultiChoice Nigeria, owners of DStv in Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan and Port Harcourt. Some of the children who attended the event called on government to make education available for orphans and street children.
While the occasion was formally used to launch the DSTv children’s club, the General Manager, DStv, Mr. Mayo Okunola said the children’s fun day/DStv club launch celebration is intended appreciate subscribers as well as formally kick off the children’s club.
He said “ Children’s day is important because it provides an opportunity for parents to hang out and have fun with their children as well as to create awareness on the rights of children in the country”.
According to him, while some children are being mistreated and abused, all stakeholders must recognize the rights of all children especially the right to education.
With the company’s investment in education through the MultiChoice education resource centres, he noted that the aim of the event is to spur more focus on the need to protect children.
On the DStv club, he explained that apart from certain incentive and reward that comes from being a member, the club would enable children understand that the role they play in the family is also essential.
Also members of the club would have the opportunity to have a say, express themselves in a controlled environment and be rewarded with exciting prizes.
8 year-old Eshiotse Itemuagbor from Pampers private school said, “ I want more orphanages for children to give people the opportunity to take care of them so that they can stop hawking on the street and also go to school.”
Excited over prizes won at the event, he thanked DStv for organizing a party to celebrate children but however encouraged them not to turn off viewing during rain or bad weather.
Denzel Bucknor, a seven-year-old pupil from Princeton school, Lagos who expressed happiness for being part of the celebration said people should always be ready to help poor children.
Willing to help, he suggested that special boxes should be placed in the street where people can go and donate gifts and other items for children especially orphans.
