THE Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ibadan zone yesterday faulted Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun state over his unilateral removal of the Vice-Chancellor of Tai Solarin University of Education, Professor Segun Awonusi and the subsequent appointment of Professor Oluyemisi Obilade as the new VC.

ASUU, at an emergency meeting held at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), maintained that the power to appoint and remove principal officers as contained in the university law is vested in the governing council.

While describing Amosun’s action as illegal and unconstitutional, ASUU resolved that the non-constitution of Governing Council for the university despite persistent demand by the union has made effective governance of the institution impossible.

In a communique signed by union leaders from the zone, namely, Dr Segun Ajiboye (UI), Karo Ogbinaka (UNILAG), Tayo Omoniyi (OOU), Jamiu Oluwatoki (LASU), Anthony Oyenuga (TASUED), and Biodun Badmus (FUNAAB), the university teachers alleged that the failure of Amosun to constitute a governing council for the institution was a premeditated action to pave way for the Governor to rob the university of its autonomy.

The union then urged Amosun to toe the path of the rule of law by constituting the governing council and re- appraising the removal of Prof Awonusi with a view to dispelling the cloud of instability on the university.
