A professor of politics and political economy, Dr. Ebere Onwudiwe, has tasked graduating students of Madonna University, Rivers State, to strive towards becoming the change agents of nation building that would reverse the current ugly situation in the country.
He also charged them on how to conscientiously navigate their way through the mess he said had been bequeathed to them by those he referred to as “tired but ever-present political elites, whose main expertise seems to be hypocrisy and opportunism.”
A distinguished fellow of Center for Democracy and Development, Onwudiwe spoke at the 2012 convocation ceremony of Madonna University on the topic Youth And The War Against Corruption. He told the graduands to contribute towards putting an end to the country being the butt of jokes around the world.
“You should be angry enough to get involved in making the country work through constructive actions,” he said, adding that they become foot soldiers of the war on corruption. “If you follow the path of honor and probity not to be a corrupt Nigerian, then half of the battle to beat corruption in this country is already won.
“You can change this country by serving as agents of change and development through voluntarism, community service and a life of political activism through work with civil society groups and non-profit organizations.”
Onwudiwe, who has taught in many universities abroad and is recipient of the ‘Officer of the Order of Mono’ Togo in 2001, identified greed as the most powerful agent of Nigeria’s underdevelopment.
