ADEBIMPE Adebambo has over the years proven to be one of the respected avant-garde designers, whose creative oeuvre is defined by experimentation.
The creative director of Beampeh label is on another creative journey, which she has titled, Jamaican Vibrations. The Harmattan/Autumn 2013 collection,
Bimpe says, “is defined by the themes of Happiness, Hope and Strength.”
The 30-piece unisex collection is inspired by the Caribbean Island nation, Jamaica, and its legends such as Bob Marley, Usain Bolt and the determination and laid back lifestyle of the people. She says she was highly inspired by Team Jamaica at the Summer 2012 Olympics in London.
The Jamaican athletes, who dominated the sprints, lighted up the Olympics tracks. Cedella, Bob Marley’s first child, designed their kit.
“I creatively worked around the Jamaican flag, reggae colours and some Jamaicans I am loving now like Usain Bolt, Bob Marley, Shelly-Ann Frayser-Pryce etc,” she says.
She continues, “I saw this as good energy all coming together, which I found so inspiring.”
Cool Runnings, a movie based on Jamaica's first attempt at the Calgary Winter Olympics in 1988, also showed the sheer force of willpower and determination, which Bimpe has tapped into for her new designs.
The designer says, “the Pan-African colours of their flag, which served as a starting point for the collection's colour palette are black, standing for hardships they faced from slavery and strength and creativity of the people that has allowed them to overcome odds; Green: the beautiful and lush greenery of land and the life that it represents and Gold: the ever present sunshine is a reminder of hope.”
ACCORDING to Adebambo, “the collection comprises elegant casual dresses, T-shirts and separates for the discerning but laid back female and male and it comes in cotton prints and batiks, knits, linens, chiffon, denim and duchess satin.”
The fabrics used are stretch denim, cotton prints (Vlisco and Daviva), specially designed batik prints, linen, and chiffon and lace details.
“The muse for the collection is the contemporary, arty, happy-go- lucky woman and man who don't over process their looks and yet manage to appear effortlessly polished,” she says.
