IN Jeremiah 18:1-6, God used the example of a potter making a vessel of clay to illustrate the extent of His ability to change our situations.
“The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying: “Arise and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause you to hear My words. Then I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was making something at the wheel. And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it again into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to make. Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter,” says the Lord. “Look, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel!”
Just as a potter moulds a vessel of clay, so did God form us with His own hands. But we, God’s beautiful creation, have become distorted and contorted out of shape. God did not create us to be losers, to be poor, to suffer lack or infirmity. But we should take heart because just as a potter is able to remould a misshapen vessel, so can God turn things around in our lives and remould us. He is the Unchangeable Changer and no one can question His authority. Once He has purposed to do something, then nothing can stand in His way. God is more than able to do things in our lives that we cannot imagine; He can make the impossible possible and change the unchangeable. All we need do is forget about our circumstances, about our age or our situation and submit to Him and we will see Him perform His wonders.
Many of us have no problem believing that God is able to do anything that He wishes. The fact that God has already done wonders before and is more than able to do them again is also not in dispute. The contentious issue however, is why God is not doing it in our lives right now. Why is God not stepping into our situations and transforming them? We know that He is more than able to give us miracles every minute of our lives. So why is this not manifesting in our situations?
For the Unchangeable Changer to work on our lives, we need to play our part. The primary condition is holiness. Genesis 17:1-2: “When Abram was 90-years-old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before me and be blameless. And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.”
God demanded that Abraham walk in perfect holiness before Him. Only when Abraham fulfilled this requirement did God step into his situation. Before the Unchangeable Changer can do His work in your life, you must have clean hands. He is interested in the way we live. We are called to be His representatives here on earth and it is important that we portray Him well and do not disgrace Him.
Obadiah 1:17: “But on Mount Zion there shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.”
For God to move in your life, deliverance must come first, and then holiness. Only after this can we expect change. We are wrong to expect God to change anything, when we ourselves refuse to change.
