FOLASHADE

17 year-old Folashade Adedeji (who has just passed her General Certificate of Education, GCE examination in the throes of pain from a belaboured heart) has been diagnosed with a hole -in -the -heart and requires an urgent open heart surgery. Her father Toyin died when she was about 10 years old but she had lived with her maternal grandparents and gone to school in Erin-Ile, Kwara State.

Her step-father has been unemployed for months the better part of 2012 and therefore unable to foot Folashade’s medical bill.

Folashade’s story is truly sad. She’s the only child of her father who was in the petroleum business until he died in a crash.

In the aftermath of his fathers’ death, his siblings have taken over and sold off most of his investments. Since her mother, Omowumi Omoniyi was not legally married to her father, her fathers’ family didn’t consult her mother on any of the disposals.

Neither have they shown any interest in how Folashade has been getting educated. They visited her in hospital once after her mother threatened them with her intention to seek legal redress. It is not certain that there’s enough left to contribute to Folashade’s surgery and so it would be unwise to tie her medical treatment to the legal redress.

Since Folashade’s discharge from the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital with the documents telling her to proceed for surgery, she has been at home in Erin-Ile unable to proceed without the necessary funds. She’s weaker some days than others.

She was referred to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) from University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital four weeks ago but she has had to stay at home due to non-availability of funds for surgery.

According to her uncle, Professor Tope Omoniyi as a result of her worsened condition, her aged grandmother has had to return home to support her mother.

The entire family will be eternally grateful to well meaning Nigerians to assist in flying Folashade to Europe or India thereby giving her a chance at surviving to adulthood.
