Basorge-Tariah

BORN on June 9, Basoene Kelsey Tariah Jr., fondly called the Grandmaster Basorge by close pals, is a choreographer and a motivational speaker. The Rivers State-native and University of Port Harcourt-trained theatre artiste is among the pioneers of comedy as show business in Nigeria. His prowess in dance won him laurels at the John Player Gold Leaf World Dance Championships in 1983 and 1984. Aside from dance and comedy, Tariah, also a producer and director, has featured in many Nollywood movies including Domitilla, Playing Games, My Guy, Warri Connection, Hit and Run, Campus Tale and others and as well as Candlelight, a TV soap. The multi-talented artiste shares his firsts with DANIEL ANAZIA.

What was childhood like?

Vivacious, adventurous and enlightening; I grew up in the middle class area of Port Harcourt. I played soccer, rode bicycle on the streets and danced as if my life depended on it. I also mixed with kids from all the classes.

Your first major break in showbiz

That was in 1983, when l won the John Player Gold Leaf World Dance Championship Zonal Finals in Port Harcourt at EEF Bee Hall.

What’s fashion to you?

It’s a form in style, expression and reflection based on social acceptance. Fashion ideas should consider climate, culture and global trends.

What do you consider first when dressing up?

Expression and decency

Your unique style

Masculinity, respect and class. A little willfulness and a firm African identity, where necessary.

Your first choice fashion piece and most worn item

The Kalabari semi-formal tail shirt, known as Etibo or eight bub.

Your first love signature scent

Bond No.9. Exquisite scent made for the man who craves for class.

First choice colour

I love black, but alternatively, I do blue.

Favourite fashion accessory

My gold sets for my native shirts.

Most expensive fashion piece in your closet

None precisely!

First choice designer

It’s Clement Mudiaga Enajemo of Mudi Africa; his attention to details has endeared him to his clients.

Your first crush and kiss on a chic

That was in my secondary school days. I can't remember her name anymore.

First embarrassment and how did you handle it?

That was in my sixth grade, years ago, when I wrote a love letter to a girl and it was read in her school refectory. Though, it earned me more friends, but it made the girl to fight me.

Your first million as an entertainer
That was when I was 16 years old and my first car was a Volkswagen Beetle.

First thing that attracts and resents you in people

I like honest, simple and humble people.

Your first choice car

I love Wrangler Jeep, but will die for 1971 an antic convertible Beetle.

 Your philosophy

To be good to all and live up to my responsibilities; first with my family, then my immediate community and mankind generally.
