Ideal food for weight reduction and gallstone prevention)

MILLET is a nutritious seed eaten as staple meal in countries such as Nigeria, Ghana and India. It can be ground into fine powder and used to prepare bread or snacks.

In Zimbabwe, Burundi, Mali, Burkina Faso and Nigeria millet is used to prepare traditional opaque beer.

It can also be used as a side dish or served under sautéed vegetables or with beans and rice. It can be sprouted and used in salads and sandwiches.

Millet has appearance that is similar to maize, but is smaller. It is tiny in size, round in shape and can be white, gray, yellow or red in colour.

This nutritious seed has fiber, B-complex vitamins including niacin, thiamin, and riboflavin, the essential amino acid methionine, lecithin, vitamin E, magnesium, phosphorous and potassium. All these nutrients are essential for a healthy living.

There are so many health benefits that are derived from consuming millet. An ideal food for those obese, as it helps in weight reduction.

It should also be included on the list of heart-healthy choices because of its status as a good source of magnesium.

Magnesium has been shown in studies to lower high cholesterol, high blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attack, especially in people with atherosclerosis or diabetic heart disease.

Magnesium also reduces the severity of asthma and frequency of migraine attacks.

Eating foods high in insoluble fiber such as millet can help women avoid gallstones.

Fiber in millet helps in preventing gallstone by speeding intestine transit time (how quickly food moves through the intestines) and also reduces the secretions of bile acid (excessive bile secretions causes gallstone formation). Intake of millet helps to prevent constipation by increasing the volume of faecal matter and facilitate its passage through the digestive tract. It also helps in cancer and type 2 diabetes mellitus prevention.
