The secret to living a relatively healthy and disease-free life has always remained the same: eat wholesome and balanced diet, have enough rest and exercise appropriately. With modern living and its high-paced lifestyle, however, it might not be that easy achieving this. And this is largely the contributory factor to some if not many of the health-related problems that are so rampant today.

Due to the nature of their jobs, some don’t eat the proper foods, while some people hardly find the time to take the necessary break and go on vacations. Although nearly everyone is now aware of the necessity of exercising, studies have shown that only about 40 percent actually engage in it.

But the fact still remains that without observing these basic things; it is most probably not possible to enjoy a healthy life.

So, a way has to be found to ensure that at least these requirements are fulfilled to an appreciable extent. And it is not enough to say that one’s schedule is too tight to accommodate them, for when the mind is determined to pursue a course, a way is usually found for it. Individuals, compulsorily, have to do something about the issue.

“Perhaps the best way to go about it is by taking a step at a time,” says Mrs. Janet Adubi of Ikeja General Hospital. “For those that have never bothered about such things, it might seem tough in the beginning. But since it is the health and wellbeing of the individuals that are at stake here, one cannot be too concerned about it.

“For instance, in the area of eating the appropriate foods, a person can start by ensuring that s/he eats one wholesome meal a day in the case of those who rarely do so. And then vacation should be consciously incorporated into the year’s programme so that the awareness is already there to go on break.”

For the exercise, it might help to join a group in the neighbourhood. This serves as a reminder and an incentive to constantly don the exercise kit and sweat it out with the others who aim at the same goal.

The bottom-line here is to try as much as possible to do those things that will aid in the quest for a healthy life.
