It’s important to have a time spent solely to cater for oneself. Some people refer to this as the ‘me time,’ which means that period when all others are relegated to the background and the individual focuses on himself/herself, relaxes and enjoys doing what s/he cherishes.
Especially those that spend a lot of time taking care of others should observe a time out. Many women fall into this category. They devote themselves so much to meeting the needs of everyone in the family that they totally forget themselves and neglect their needs in the process.
It is, however, imperative that the ‘me time’ is incorporated into the schedule to enable proper rest that rejuvenates and reinvigorates. Failure to do this can result in a number of things including exhaustion, irritation, lack of concentration and the feeling of being overwhelmed among others.
During this time, people indulge and generally pamper themselves. While some may go for a massage, others go to the beach or visit friends they have not seen in a while. Going for shopping, taking a walk in the park or watching nature does the trick. The idea is to just take the mind off daily routine, which is not only tasking but can also be tiring.
To be able to draw all the benefits accruable from this venture, proper arrangements have to be made to ensure that one’s daily routine is being well taken care of. For instance, in the case of the married woman, there must have been some provision made for the care of the children while she is away. The husband needs to be put in the picture for his cooperation and support. All other areas should also be properly handled so that the mind is at rest while the time last.
The duration and location of the exercise depend on the individual, as some don’t really fancy the idea of going anywhere for relaxation and enjoyment other than in their homes. For this group of people, reading, listening to good, soothing music, gardening or just pottering round the house undisturbed would serve the purpose.
The preferences in this regard differ greatly with people and these can range from the sublime to the ‘ridiculous.’ What really matters at the end of the day, however, is that the individual feels relaxed and clearheaded, able to cope with whatever situation and demand of daily living with more vigour and enthusiasm.
The location should apparently correspond with the nature of the activity chosen for the purpose. If it is taking place at home, ensure there is no disturbance at all. Remember this time is solely for you and no one else.
Planning well in advance is crucial to the success and execution of the whole project. It will be of no use if at the end some avoidable minor incidents are permitted to ‘spoil the show.’
Carefully consider and select the place(s) most appropriate for the activities you have decided to undertake during your time out. Mentally prepare yourself for a wonderful time and don’t plunge headlong into it without having adequately mapped out your strategies well in advance.
