Saraki, U.S. condemn Boko Haram attacks on Dikwa IDPs camp

SENATE President, Dr. Bukola Saraki and the United States Embassy in Nigeria on Thursday condemned the recent suicide attacks by members of Boko Haram on the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Dikwa community of Borno state in which about 51persons including women and children were killed and 78 others were injured.

Saraki, in a statement by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, in Abuja, described the new upsurge in attacks carried out by Boko Haram as both condemnable and unacceptable. He therefore, urged the military to beef up security in all IDPs’ camps.

While sympathizing with the victims of the attack, the Senate President also advised the security forces to step up their intelligence gathering activities in order to prevent future attacks on defenceless citizens and IDPs.

“My heart goes out to those that lost their lives and loved ones in this tragic event of Tuesday in IDPs’ camp in Dikwa, Borno State.

“We cannot continue to live in fear and agony of insurgency in our father land. The government is doing its best and likewise, our security forces are doing striving hard and we sincerely acknowledge their efforts so far. We can feel the positive impact and effects. But as a country, we need to do more. Our call, goes to the world powers, to come to our aid. We need help regarding terrorism. “ Saraki pleaded.



In a statement signed by the US Diplomatic Mission on Thursday, in Abuja, the U.S. government’s restated that it will continue to support Nigeria governments fight against terrorism.

The statement which expressed the American government’s deepest condolences to the families of the victims read, “The US Embassy condemns the reported suicide attacks on internally displaced persons in Dikwa town, Borno State that occurred on February 9.



“The US remains committed to assisting internally displaced populations in North-Eastern Nigeria through humanitarian relief efforts. 


“We will also continue to support the Nigerian government in its fight against terrorism” the embassy stated.
