PLATEAU United recorded the first victory of the new Nigerian Professional League (NPFL) season after beating visiting Niger Tornadoes 2-1 at the Rwang Pam Stadium in Jos yesterday.

Plateau took the lead in the 17th minute through Charles Okafor, then Tornadoes pegged the hosts through Kunle Issa after 64 minutes.

Plateau later took the lead after Ibeh Johnson delivered three minutes from time.

However, other matches will be played today at various centres across the country.

In Akure Township Stadium, Ondo State, Sunshine Stars will square up with Akwa United. Akure hasn’t been a good hunting ground for the Promise Keepers but their run of seven games without a loss should put phobia in the minds of the Owena Waves.

Three-time champions, Kano Pillars will be at home to Enugu Rangers. The Sai Masu Gida won 2-1 in the corresponding fixture last season and they will be looking to set the records straight and race to the top of the table.

The encounter between Heartland and Warri Wolves is expected to be a promising one as the Heartland’s management has been able to convince Fortune Omoniwari, Chinedu Efugh, Bright Ejike and ageless Julius Ubido to stay at the club.

However, Wolves are still a shadow of the side that qualified for the CAF Champions League last season.

New entrant, Ikorodu United will test their skills against the Abia Warriors today at the Onikan Stadium.

The Oga Boys are an unknown bunch, as their head coach Edema Benson has decided to stick to less-known players for this season.

Lobi Stars will engage the Shooting Stars at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan. The Oluyole Warriors are expected to defeat the Makurdi-based club without difficulty with the newly acquired experienced Coach Kadiri Ikhana.

New look Wikki Tourists after losing Shammah Tanze and Ebenezer Odeyemi during the transfer window, take on a resurgent El-Kanemi Warriors at the Karkanda Stadium.

Nasarawa United will be facing a newly promoted MFM FC
at the Aper Aku Stadium, and boys from the North know the implication of underrating a mobile team in the mould of the MFM side.

Another match that is expected to draw crowd will be the Giwa FC against FC Ifeanyi Uba at the Rwang Pam Stadium. The Giwa Boys will be hoping to contend with the newly acquired quality players by the Nwewi based outfit.
