INEC wants clarification on Anambra political situation

IN its bid to determine the political status of lawmakers on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) sacked by the Supreme Court in Anambra State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is seeking for clarification on the matter from the apex court.

A team of lawyers led by Mr. Adeboyega Awomolo, in a motion on notice dated February 5, 2016 on behalf of INEC is asking for clarification on six issues.

INEC said that it was confused on the step to follow, urging the Supreme Court to review its judgment in the interest of justice.

The motion, which was brought under Order 8 Rule 16 of the Supreme Court Rules, 1999, Section 22 of the Supreme Court Act, 2004 and Section 6 of the 1999 Constitution, had a 10-paragraph affidavit of urgency attached to it.

The main motion has a deposed affidavit of 19 paragraphs, all deposed to by a lawyer in the law firm of Mr. Awolomo, Ebuka Nwaeze.
This is coming after a panel of the Supreme Court justices recognised the list originally submitted by the Ejike Oguebego-led state executive committee of the Peoples Democratic Party.

In the judgment delivered on January 29, 2016, the court had affirmed the ruling of the Federal High Court, which posited that only the constitutionally recognised state party executive led by Oguebego could organise the party’s primaries.

The lawmakers affected by the verdict of the Supreme Court are; Senators Andy Uba, Stella Uduah, Tony Nwoye Okechukwu, Chris Azubogu, and others of the PDP.
