APC chieftains bicker over board appointments
Buhari wades in
CHIEFTAINS of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) across the country are now at loggerheads over the sharing of positions on the boards of government parastatals and agencies.
The problem which has the prospect of tearing the party apart had been rearing its head even before the resolve by President Muhammadu Buhari to sack no fewer than 26 heads of parastatals and agencies of government of their positions.
Trouble started after the party leadership under Chief John Odigie-Oyegun mandated chairmen and vice chairmen of the 36 state chapters of the APC to come up with a list of 50 nominees from their states that would form the pool of those to be considered for board appointments.
Rather than call a meeting of stakeholders of the party, The Guardian was reliably told that most of the state chairmen and vice chairmen opted to pick their cronies and relations as their preferred nominees for board appointments into agencies and parastatals of government.
The situation was further compounded by claims that members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who recently defected to the APC and were keen on getting board appointments induced some party chieftains with money in a desperate bid to get on the list of the nominees for board appointments.
Expectedly, the development led to series of complaints and petitions from aggrieved members of the party from across the country, forcing the presidency which was piqued over the issue to come to the rescue of the ugly situation.
The source who asked not to be named noted:” The truth is that most of our party chairmen in the states in conjunction with even some state governor settled for their relatives and wives.
Some picked their friends and cronies even when it was common knowledge they did not labour or work for the success of the president or the party in the last election. The whole exercise was actually dogged by crises.
The worst side of the story was that the mode of selection actually negated the intendment of Mr President who wanted men and women that he could work with to move the country forward. Beside, the presidency had to wade into the matter because you can only imagine that it would have been difficult to handle such an unwieldy number of nominees from all the states of the federation.
