TWO suspected female suicide bombers on Tuesday attacked the Dikwa Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Borno state, killing 58 people with 67 others injured.
The female terrorists had detonated explosives strapped on their bodies when the people were receiving their breakfast.

The suspects, according to military authorities on Wednesday in Maiduguri, were female teenagers who had sneaked into the Dikwa camp, but one of them refused to detonate the explosives strapped on her body because her parents were among the IDPs .
Dikwa is a border council headquarter 85 kilometres east of Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.

A soldier attached to the camp, who was not authorized to comment on Tuesday’s suicide camp bombings in a telephone yesterday said: “This twin incident happened on Tuesday morning; and because of destruction of telecom masts by the insurgents, there was no communication between Maiduguri and Dikwa.

It was on my arrival yesterday that I used the phone to speak to you now.
“The camp in Dikwa was attacked by three suicide bombers, but one of them refused to detonate her explosives, because according to her, after being interrogated; she confessed that her parents are among the displaced persons taking
refuge in the camp since last month.”

“We had to cordon off the camp, as there may have been other suspected suicide bombers at the periphery of the resettlement camp.

The insurgents are desperate to attack soft targets like this camp, which has no electricity or means of communication as all the telecom masts are destroyed,” said the soldier, who craved for anonymity yesterday

On casualties, the North-East Zonal Coordinator of National Management Agency (NEMA), Mohammed Kanar said that 67 IDPs were injured and had been evacuated by the agency’s rescue team to Maiduguri hospitals for treatment.
