The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 14 academic programmes for the Niger State-owned Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai.

Vice chancellor of the institution, Professor Muhammad Nasiru Maiturare, disclosed this recently when he presented the NUC’s report on the accreditation exercise to Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, who is also the Visitor to the University.

According to the vice chancellor, of the 14 courses presented for accreditation, 11 courses were given full accreditation while interim accreditation was granted to three courses.

According to him, courses with full accreditation include Business Administration, Agriculture, French, History and International Studies.

In the Faculty of Education, five courses, Agriculture Education, Biology Education, Geography Education, Mathematics Education and Guidance and Counselling had full approval, while Chemistry Education, Computer Science Education and Physics Education got interim accreditation. Food Science and Geology also got the nod of NUC.

Maiturare also said that plans were underway by the university to introduce medical programmes, stressing that already a consultant has been engaged to design the programmes for the College of Medicine, while the institution was linking up with formidable medical colleges abroad to ensure quality of teaching.

He commended the state government for the support given to the institution prior to the NUC accreditation exercise, stressing that, “the prompt intervention by the government made the feat recorded by the institution possible. ”

The governor assured the institution’s management of government’s resolve to support the university’s effort at running the medical school.

Bello therefore directed the management to look inwards and enhance the internally generated revenue of the institution to reduce over reliance on the state government.
