AGAINST the backdrop of COP 21 Conference in Paris,  a National Policy on Climate Change that would soon drive home the implementation of the project in Nigeria, has  already been put in place.

The Minister of Environment, Amina Mohammed dropped the hint in a parley with journalists in Abuja, said women and children would be taking a centre stage in the project, “we have special programmes for
them.”

“Climate Change holds much for women and children and Paris Conference Decisions inform our framework of agreement. We intend to collaborate with the ministries of education and other relevant agencies to press on the projects.”

To Mohammed, The three tiers of government would be involved in the implementation of climate change project as to push the message to all and sundry. When 2016 budget is approved we would commence the operational framework.”

She stated, “we now have a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to change the way we do things, and Nigeria will be at the fore-front to demonstrate how the initiatives can work. We are willing to resuscitate Lake Chad Basin so that peace and security can return there.”

“The ministry will strive to empower people, by taking climate action and protecting the environment very seriously; create greener, more resilient and pleasant cities to live in. Nigerian cities are now adopting global best practices with low-carbon transport solutions.”

The minister recalled that Nigeria, like is many other nations went to COP21 with a new voice and high expectations of adopting a legally binding agreement that can equitably promote climate change mitigation.

“The adoption of a new international Climate Agreement, applicable to all parties with the aim of keeping global warming below2 degree Celsius. This paradigm shift requires all countries to address the challenges and opportunities of climate change,” she added.
