SUNSHINE Stars of Akure defender, Stephen Eze, is in line to pair with Jamiu Alimi at the heart of Nigeria’s defence when the Super Eagles meet the Mena of Niger Republic in the opening game of their African Nations Championship (CAHN) campaign.

Eze is replacing suspended Abia Warriors’ Captain, Austin Obaroakpo, who was booked in both legs of the CHAN qualifiers against Burkina Faso last year.

The coaches tested Eze’s partnership with Alimi during the friendlies against Angola and Cote d’Ivoire and apparently found him worthy of occupying Oboroakpo’s position.

The Eagles had a feel of the Stade Regional Nyamirambo, Kigali, yesterday ahead of today’s game.
Speaking on today’s game, Coach Sunday Oliseh said his mission in today’s game is to ensure that the Eagles got the three points to get the team in good stead for the remaining matches.

He believes the Eagles are in a position to start the championship on a good note, adding, however, that they are not taking the Nigeriene fore granted.

Nigeria beat Niger Republic 2-0 in an international friendly last year, but Oliseh believes that result would not have any bearing in today’s game.

Speaking to the international press yesterday, Oliseh said: “We are ready for our game against Niger. As you can see every player in my team is match fit and ready to give his best in this tournament.
“We have put in adequate preparations and we have been very lucky with injuries too.”
