Despite directives from the Federal Government that Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also know as fuel, should sell at N86.50k per liter, oil marketers in Ebonyi State are still selling above the approved pump price, The Guardian has learnt.

Checks at fuel stations revealed that many fuel stations are selling between N130 and 140 per liter, as station managers claim that they bought the product at a high price and would be running losses if they sold the it at the fixed pump price.

It was gathered that RC, AEMASOL and Mayor filling stations sell the product at N130 per litre, while at Brass Oil and JEZCO along Afikpo road, it goes for N125 per liter. At Dandilas and Oando filling stations along Ogoja road, a liter of fuel goes for N120.

A pump assistant at JEZCO filling station, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that they are selling products they bought last year.
“We are not aware of any official pump price by the government. We sell at prices approved by the management of the station. The price, sometimes, varies; we sell between N130 to N140, but now, we are selling at 125. Tomorrow, we may sell with a new price” he said.

Speaking on the development, the Special Adviser to the governor on Petroleum Products, Onyibe Chima, described antics of oil marketers as “unacceptable,” lamenting that it caused the people untold hardship.

He noted that his office has been working to ensure that marketers adjust to the new price, warning that government will immediately clamp down on marketers that failed to comply.
“Instead of waiting patiently at depot to load at official pump price, these marketers will cut corners with the motive of making bigger sales. They forget that, even with approve pump price, they will still make a decent profit.

Efforts to reach the state president of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) proved abortive.
