Dissolved councillors oppose fresh council polls in Ondo

MEMBERS of the legislative arms in the 18 local governments of Ondo State, who were dissolved by the administration of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko in 2009, have rejected the plan of the state government to hold a fresh council election.

Last week, the state government, through a notice of election given by the Chairman of Ondo State Independent Electoral commission (ODIEC), Professor Olugbenga Ige, announced April 23 this year as Election Day and called on political partied to prepare for it.

But the dissolved councilors, speaking on the platform of the 2009 Councilors’ Forum, said conducting the election as scheduled by ODIEC, “is like putting the cart before the horse.”

According to the group, who are litigants in several cases challenging the legality of their dissolution for which the state government claimed as the main reason for not holding council elections, more than seven years after, the election should not be held until the cases are disposed of by the courts or an acceptable settlement terms are reached by the parties.

In a statement signed by the duo of Yinka Akosile and Toyin Akinyoyenu, the chairman and Secretary of the Forum respectively, they said all efforts to reach an agreement with the government in the past have met brick walls.
