Enugu in God’s hands as revenue falls, says Ugwuanyi

Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, has lamented the poor economic situation occasioned by the fall in oil revenue, saying that the sustenance of states would only be in God’s hands.

Ugwuanyi also described the capacity to pay workers salary as a major issue, stressing that embarking on development projects has become a herculean task.

The governor made the lamentation yesterday during a thanksgiving  service/reception held at the Roman Catholic Assumption Church, Nkwo Nike  for the Speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly, Edward Uchenna Ubosi.

He pointed out that in the recent past, the country enjoyed money from excess crude, explaining that presently Nigerians were yearning for a bail out to  at least help states pay salaries of workers.

He, however, said that, in spite of the murky economic fortunes, Enugu State would continue to prosper with whatever it could generate and meet her obligations to the people.

The governor anchored his optimism and conviction on the prayers the people of the state have been making for his government and promised to rule with the fear of God.

“We must work in Enugu State with the fear of God.  Always put us in prayer.  Put us in prayer and we shall succeed,” Ugwuanyi said.

Preaching a sermon at the occasion, the officiating priest, Rev. Patrick Ugwu lauded the governor for his care for the poor and the needy and urged him to continue with his good works.

He charged the congregation on the need to do the will of God no matter the situation, stressing that he was optimistic the country would overcome her challenges.

Speaking at the occasion, Speaker Ubosi, said  the sermon taken from the Gospel of Luke that gave account of the humble birth of Christ was like talking about himself.

According to him, Christ was born in a small village in Israel where no one thought a messiah would be born.

He likened himself to Christ saying that among all the members of the House of Assembly, Enugu State, he was chosen to be the Speaker.

“It is like the Gospel is about me.  I was the smallest in the House but was chosen to be the speaker,” the elated Ubosi said.
