WITH the formal commissioning of Startimes Digital Television in Umuahia, Abia State, the state deputy governor, Hon Ude Oko Chukwu has counseled the Nigerian Television Authority ( NTA ) to stabilize its signal, which he said was often intermittently not available.

The deputy governor who spoke recently while commissioning the Startimes Digital Television which is a joint venture of NTA and StarTimes at the premises of Abia State-owned Broadcasting Corporation ( BCA ) in Umuahia, pointed out that unless the NTA stabilizes its service, viewers may get used to watching Startimes more.

He said “ the presence of Startimes now would therefore reinvigorate the NTA whose service is intermittently unavailable”.

Welcoming the Startimes to the state and wishing it successful operation , Oko Chukwu tasked it on promoting the state government’s five point agenda of education, agriculture, oil and gas, commerce and industry, health and infrastructure development.

In their separate remarks , the Director-General of NTA Mr Sola Omole and the StarTimes Chief Executive Officer Mr Jack Liu said that with the presence of StarTimes, Abia residents now enjoy digital television service and urged them to enjoy the service always.

Similarly, the Director -General of the BCA that provided the StarTimes the platform facility, Mr Alozie Ndulaka , commended the state governor Dr Okezie Ikpeazu for granting StarTimes operational access.

Managing Director of the NTA TV Enterprises which is the commercial outfit of the NTA, Mr Maxwell Loko said that the NTA StarTimes partnership was a child of necessity that resulted from the International Telecommunication Union’s directive that all African countries should transit from analogue to digital broadcasting services by June 2015.

He added that the NTA response to this transition was to commence the NTA Digital Multi-Channel project and that to fulfill this objective, NTA entered into a joint venture partnership with the Star Communication of China which gave birth to NTA-Star TV Network with the operating name StarTimes.

According to him, the core objective of the partnership is to provide excellent, innovative and technology driven digital terrestrial television that is affordable to all Nigerians adding that in the past five years, the company has deployed digital television to over 50 Cities in Nigeria and still extending to more cities even as StarTimes operates in over 14 other African countries.

He, therefore, assured Abians of exciting digital television experience of both local and international content including NTA Igbo channel that is dedicated to Igbo speaking viewers.
