University-of-CalabarIt was a moment of sober reflection as academic staff in the University of Calabar (UNICAL), under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), held a special congress to commemorate the death of the Late Professor Festus Iyayi.

Iyayi, former national president of ASUU died in a motor accident during the national strike embarked upon by the union two years ago.

ASUU members in the university extolled the virtues of the late activist noting that as a “revolutionary fighter,” he was always on the side of the people.

In a statement issued after the congress and jointly signed by the branch chairman, Dr. Tony Eyang and secretary, Dr. Jonas Akung, the union described the late Iyayi as a visionary and dogged fighter, noting that “Iyayi struggled hard to inspire a new Nigeria, a nation free from the vicious grip of both internal and external predators whose interest is to appropriate the nation and its resources to themselves.

“We honour our beloved Comrade Iyayi today for what he represented; the power of his vision, his doggedness and steadfastness as a fighter against reactionary and neo-colonialist forces,” the university teachers added.
