Prof. Emeritus Vidal Fowler dies at 92
EMERITUS Professor of Anaesthesia, Vidal Fowler, has died at the age of 92.
Fowler, who is survived by his wife, Dr. (Mrs) Leila Fowler, three children- Mr. Babatunde Fowler, Mrs. Funke Amba and Ms. Irene Fowler, and six grandchildren, died at the Reddington Hospital Lagos. He was ill briefly and hospitalised for about a week.
According to his daughter, Ms Fowler, who described her father’s passage as a very sad development, “He was a very loving, caring and dutiful father who would be sorely missed by all of us. ”
Ms. Fowler added that, “apart from being a very cultured person who was also very professional in approach to things, especially in his field of medcine- Anaesthesia, he was a lover of outdoor and indoor sporting activities. He also had a great sense of humour.”
Pro Chancellor/Chairman, Governing Council of Hallmark University, Prof Wale Omole, described the late Fowler as a lover of knowledge, who took delight in mentoring younger people and watching them make it to the zenith.
“He was excellent, cool headed, very humble and dedicated to his work, and was such a good manager of young people particularly his students, whom he did everything to build their confidence and play with them. Apart from being a professor of great repute, he was a man who was there for everybody,” Omole stated.
On Fowler’s contribution to the country’s educational development, Omole said, “He was one of the earlier professors that touched lives in their various areas of commitment. He was very vast in research and training and in the process produced many first class students and monitored their progress. One of the main factors of education is capacity building, and because he was very passionate with his job, he followed up the training of his students with mentoring.
“He was also a mentor at the level of his family and the same passion with which he took education within his family was what he demonstrated outside of home.’’
