Pro-Biafra campaigners want to derail Buhari’s govt, says Sani

LEADER of the Northern Civil Society Coalition and senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sani, has said that those agitating for the resurrection of Biafra, especially the leaders of South-East, are plotting to destroy President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration and cause chaos in Nigeria.

According to him, those allegedly behind the Biafran campaign were those pro-Jonathan government interests who lost out in the last general election and now clandestinely plotting to derail the democratic government of Buhari.

Sani, who spoke with journalists while reacting to the resuscitation of Biafra, said that “the new agitation for Biafra is a misguided, ill-conceive and ill-fated course”, just as he pointed out that “it is an ill-wind that does no good to those people who are blowing it or to Nigeria as a whole.”

Meanwhile, the rights group has called on President Buhari to call the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, to order to withdraw his undemocratic and unconstitutional threats to physically stop supporters of the detained pro-Biafra Europe-based Radio Director, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, from carrying out a planned nationwide peaceful rallies to ask for the release of their leader.

HURIWA said President Muhammadu Buhari must compel him (Solomon Arase) to respect the constitutional provisions of basic rights to freedom of assembly and speech to avoid the possible shedding of blood of peaceful protesters and creating tensions.

The rights group said the right to freely protest peacefully against or in support of government policies or decision or indecision once taken away by brute force could undermine democracy and the rule of law.

On the reported signal sent to all 36 state commands and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by Arase to crush peaceful protesters demanding the release from illegal detention of Kanu, HURIWA said: “Solomon Arase the IGP would be dragged to International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands, for prosecution over crimes against humanity should any blood of pro-Biafra protester be shed following his very notorious public signal to the police state commands.”
