CONCERNED about the plight of commuters on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, the Ogun State Government has embarked on palliative work on bad portions of the expressway.

Speaking during an inspection tour of the ongoing palliative work being carried out by the Ogun State Ministry of Works on the federal road yesterday, Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun said, “In the real sense of it and for me there are no federal people, the people plying this road and other affected Federal roads within our axis are our people. We are all Nigerians and we are already collaborating with the Federal government to contribute our on quota to ensure that this road is fixed.”

The governor who was accompanied on the inspection by his wife, Mrs. Olufunsho Amosun; Ogun State Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs.) Yetunde Onanuga and members of the Ogun State executive council, assured that the really bad portions of the expressway currently causing major gridlock around the Arepo area will be fixed within three days.

He said this was even more necessary in order to ease traffic on the ever-busy road before this coming weekend when major churches on the expressway are billed to hold their monthly programs that often attract millions of worshippers.

Although it is commendable and appears good on the surface, how durable will the palliative work last, even as we don’t know when Julius Berger will return to the road. Instead of spending the tax payers money on the distressed road, why not allow the private sector to spend their own money on it? The Senate has even started advocating PPP for terrible federal roads in the South East. Sure some government officials are frustrating PPP because of what they would get from contact awards.

Another concessionnaire called Motoway Assets Limited has suddenly emerged laying claims to the road, even while the government is spending our money for palliative measures. Na wa for Naija o. Why give a road as important as the Lagos-Ibadan to a company that has no money when it was the same reason the FG claimed made it revoke Bi-Courtney’s concession. They have not told us the whole truth about the road.
