Gerry-ByrneFormer Liverpool and England left-back Gerry Byrne has died at the age of 77, the club announced on Saturday.

“Liverpool Football Club are saddened to learn of the passing of former left-back Gerry Byrne at the age of 77,” Liverpool announced in a statement on their website.

“The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool FC are with Gerry’s family and friends at this time.”

Byrne made 333 Liverpool appearances and is best remembered for playing through their extra-time win over Leeds United in the 1965 FA Cup final after breaking his collarbone in the seventh minute.

He was a member of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning squad, but did not play in the final and was not presented with a winner’s medal until 2009.
