A statement by the spokesperson of the company, Mohammed Kandi, noted that the procurement was part of the corporate plan by KEDCO to roll out at least 500,000 meters to its customers within a period of five years.

The statement said, “KEDCO has begun the execution of its five years investment plans, which include stepping up its investment needs in line with the directives of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) that distribution companies should provide meters to all their customers.”

It added that, “Indeed, this is a huge investment; a right step in the right direction for the company, and good news to all its valued customers whose frequently asked questions centred on getting a meter for individual household.”

The statement informed that providing meters to all classes of customers has remained a huge challenge facing Nigerian DISCOs, considering the huge amount of money that is required to purchase meters (PPM) for all the power consumers on their network.

Surmounting the metering challenge, KEDCO said it is making intensive efforts in bridging the metering gaps, adding that this would enable the company recover at least 90 percent of its investments, as well as end the era of estimated billing.

The statement noted that metering all classes of power users in franchise area is a top priority for KEDCO’s management. They however appealed to all customers to be patient and supportive, adding that the company’s determination to satisfying the electricity needs of the people was achievable.

If cost of metering or sourcing the meter had being the problem. There are creative financing that could have being done to help this. if this disco enter into an agreement with Nigeria meter producer to provide the meters, then each customer would be billed for the meter on a monthly bases. The discos would keep their portion, pay the meter provider the portion each month, until each meter is paid for.

They know what to do but would rather delay implementation to benefit some sectors. You see, estimate billing fraudulently enriches the Discos. They get paid for what they did not supply; people are billed for what they never consumed. I was once a victim for about 5years before i got my meter installed; PHCN peggeed my bill @ N4800/month for a whole year but supplied power for 3weeks/yearly (for 2007 period only).
