Sylvester Emmanuel and Christy Agugbom at the weekend became the men and women champions respectively of the 29th Dala Hard Court Tennis Tournament, sponsored by Fidelity Bank at the Kano Polo Club.

The week-long tournament, which the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF) President, Sani Ndanusa, described as the biggest tennis tournament in Northern Nigeria, featured players from across the country.

Emmanuel defeated Michael Moses by two sets to one in three hours to win the N500, 000, men’s singles prize money, with Moses taking the N250, 000 second position prize.

In the women category, Agugbom beat her closest rival, Sarah Adegoke 6-3 to pick the top prize and the accompanying N300, 000 cash reward.

At the end of the event, an elated Emmanuel expressed his joy at winning the championship, while calling on the defeated players to take their loss as a call to work harder.

“I am extremely happy for winning in the men’s category. This is my first time in this type of competition and I feel delighted,” Emmanuel said.

Speaking at the end of the event, Ndanusa commended the organisers for sustaining the competition for the past 29 years.

He said, “We are indeed commending organisers of this tournament, under the able leadership of Alhaji Bashari Muhammad Gumel.

“I am appreciative of the players’ talent and creativity, especially in the men’s category, being young players. This can be seen as an indication for them to perform wonderfully well in future.”

Also speaking at the event, former Nigeria Football Association (NFA) Chairman, Ibrahim Galadima, commended the organisers for putting together such a gigantic competition.

He called on governments at all levels and other well to do individuals in the society to help the development of tennis.
