IRAWO University Centre (IUC), an educational centre affiliated to the University of Ibadan, Oyo State is set to mark its 50th year anniversary, scheduled for October 20, 2015.

Having moved to its permanent site at Agbowo, Ibadan in 1990, the centre is using the event to upgrade its facilities by raising a development fund of 200 million to renovate its old structure, provide modern seminar rooms as well as ensure that there are funds to sustain the project since most students are scholarship beneficiaries.

Established in 1969, the centre, a non-profit organisation is one of the numerous educational and social welfare projects promoted by the Educational Co-operation Society that engages in tutorial programmes, seminars and workshops, informal conversions with leading professionals and university academia, among other formation activities.

According to the Managing Director Educational Co-operation Society, Dr. Emmaunel Chukwudi Ihenacho, the centre is a direct intervention in the education of youths who are the bedrock of Nigeria. “Irawo has in the past 40 years nurtured thousands of young people to excel at their chosen professions and has taught them to approach their lives and careers as a determined quest for the uprightness and sincere commitment that our country so badly needs.”

He noted that the foundation lays special emphasis on the spirit of service and the awareness of one’s social responsibility in contributing to the needs of the society. “The academic performance of residents and their competence at their various places of work is the strongest testimonial of our residence.”

Director of the IUC, Mr. Nwachukwu Egbunike while noting that the aim of the centre is to contribute to the academic, professional, human, cultural and spiritual formation of the student, placing emphasis on conducive atmosphere for academic work, added that thousands of students and professional men have benefited from the activities of the centre.

“Even though, the centre can accommodate 35 resident students and staff, it is nothing compared to the thousands of students and lecturers who participate in its activities and it is opened to all, irrespective of religious belief and ethnicity. Some of its facilities include a library, classrooms, computer laboratory, an auditorium, a sports field as well as accommodation facilities.”

Activities to mark the anniversary includes a public lecture on family and university life, which holds at the Trenchard hall, University of Ibadan, a mass of thanksgiving will hold on October 21 at the Church of Ascension, Bodija, alumni reunion at the IUC Agbowo and then a development fund launch.
