NYSC kicks off free health initiative for rural dwellers in Benue
Director-General of National Youths Service Corps, (NYSC), Brigadier- General Johnson Bamidele Olawumi has called for sustain collaboration from critical stakeholders across the country for the free medical outreach of the NYSC-Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers, (NYSC-HIRD).
Olawunmi, who was represented by the State Coordinator, NYSC, Mrs. Esther Athamenuwan made the call recently at Ikpayongo, in Gwer- East local council area of Benue State while flagging off the 2015 one-week nationwide health week under the NYSC health initiative for rural dwellers.
The NYSC boss expressed pleasure that the scheme which was conceived as an idea over a year ago had gained a national acceptance and stated the goal of the scheme as aiming at mobilising corps medical volunteers in providing health interventions through diagnosis, treatment, referrals and proper prevention mechanism for the general well-being of rural Nigerians across the nation.
He said that the confidence the NYSC had in the success of the programme was hinged on the already secured support from some stakeholders who were either assisting the scheme with drugs, other support medical materials and personnel.
“I sincerely acknowledge the support we have enjoyed from our various partners and stakeholders towards making the NYSC-HIRD a reality. It is our strong belief that history will never forget your genuine efforts at enhancing the quality of life of our people,” he stated.
Mrs. Athanemuwan on her part lauded the enthusiasm and response received from the Benue community for the scheme and assured them that NYSC would continue to improve on the well being of host communities in diverse ways.
In a remark, representative of Gwer-East Council Chairman, Nancy Umande said that that was the first time such a laudable initiative had taken place in the community and called for its sustenance.
Umande who noted that the development was a clear evidence of the change agenda brought to the state by Governor Samuel Ortom and President Buhari and called on the downtrodden in the area who before then could not afford to access drugs due to lack of finances to embrace the NYSC gesture.
