MEN of the underworld have terminated the life of a policeman at Ugbolu, a quiet settlement, in Delta State.

Though details of the incident were still sketchy as at press time yesterday, the spokesman for the state’s Police Command, Celestina Kalu, however, confirmed the killing.

It was gathered that the robbers, who routinely lay siege to the lonely Asaba-Ugbolu-Illah-Ebu-Uromi Road, ambushed a police team at about 7.30 pm on Wednesday, leading to a shoot-out and eventual death of the fallen cop.

Although Kalu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said that only one policeman was killed, but four of the dead bodies dumped at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Asaba, yesterday morning, wore police uniform, The Guardian learnt.

She added that the force was poised to apprehending the fleeing robbers with a view to bringing them to justice.

Meanwhile, former Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Fred Anesa, a retired army officer; was also yesterday kidnapped in the state by armed men.

According to his daughter, he was abducted around Eku town on his way to Asaba.

It was learnt that the kidnappers called members of his family yesterday to inform them that their father had been captured. They were also warned not to inform the police if they wanted alive, The Guardian further learnt.

The kidnappers, according to her, did not ask for ransom but said they would call back in due course.
