Porbeni dreams big, as Nigeria storms Samoa for Youth Olympic Games
THIS is a busy weekend for Nigerian sports. While some Nigerians will focus their attention on the Super Eagles who will be playing against their Tanzanian counterparts in the 2017 Afcon qualifiers, others will beam their searchlight in Yet the interest of some other Nigerians will be on the Pacific island nation of Samoa, where Team Nigeria will campaign in the fifth Commonwealth Youth Olympic Games.
The Games, which will hold from September 5 to11, will see over 1000 young Commonwealth athletes compete for 107 gold medals in nine sports.
Team Nigeria, which has landed in Samoa with a contingent of 13 athletes and undisclosed number of officials, will compete in three events, including athletics, weightlifting and boxing.
The head of Team Nigeria’s athletics team, former national hurdler, Seigha Porbeni, told The Guardian on phone yesterday from the team’s camp in Samoa that the kids were ready to do the nation proud.
