Policeman allegedly kills two teenagers in Osun

IT was a dark Sunday for the people of Egbedi, in Ilesa-West Local Council Area of Osun State and the parents of two siblings of the same parents who were allegedly killed by a drunken policeman while driving an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) carelessly.

The driver rammed into an electric pole before hitting the two kids who were playing in the frontage of their father’s house.

One of the kids, simply identified as Sade, five years old, and the younger one, three year-old Aanu, was said to have died on the spot as a
result of the impact, while the driver of the APC drove away.

The development forced some commercial motorcylists in the neighbourhood to pursue the policeman but could not catch up with him
as he was said to have escaped.

But irate people in the neighbourhood reportedly mobilised thereafter and attacked the ‘A’ Division Police Station at Ayeso area in Ilesa.

Some vehicles parked in the station including other valuable property and the police quarters in the station were said to have been vandalised.

Efforts by the policemen on duty who fired some teargas canisters and gun shots, ostensibly to scare and disperse the crowd were to no avail.

The mob was said to have braced up in desperation and dared the policemen. The father of children who had earlier gone to the farm reportedly returned only to be told of the sad report. The man went to the police station but could not make any headway in securing the release
of the corpses of the kids to him even with the assistance of his lawyer.

He pleaded with Governor Rauf Aregbesola and other well-meaning Nigerians to intervene in order to get justice over the death of his children.

When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mrs. Folasade Odoro confirmed the incident, describing it as a case of
accident.

She explained that the driver of the APC lost control and hit an electric pole in which the kids were in the process electrocuted.

While describing the incident as unfortunate, Mrs. Odoro said that all operational vehicles in the station, private cars and police quarters were vandalised by the angry mob.
