ChevronTHE Enugu State government has classified Tuberculosis (TB) disease as a public health threat, following detection of 1,542 cases of the disease in the state in 2014.

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi said this yesterday, during the commissioning and handing over of a Chest Clinic donated to the state by Star Deepwater Petroleum Limited, a Chevron Company together with its co-venturers in the Agbami field — Famfa Oil Limited, Statoil Nigeria Limited, Petrobras and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation  (NNPC).

Lamenting the prevalence of the disease, the governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sam Ngwu, said that 20 per cent of the TB cases were detected in Ogrute District Hospital of Igboeze-North Council, which is the beneficiary of the chest clinic.

The clinic is equipped with ultra modern x-ray machines, laboratories, Gene Xpert machine, treatment rooms and other state of the art machines, as well as male and female wards.

Ugwuanyi noted that government was delighted by the donation, which was built within a year and meant to provide succor for its people, who have been suffering from the disease.

He said that it was unfortunate that Nigeria ranked third in the world with 590,000 cases n 2014 in terms of number of people living with TB diseases.
