MOSOP seeks prosecution of killer cop
THE Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the police authorities to prosecute the officer who last week shot dead an Ogoni bus driver in Port Harcourt or risk mass protest.
While advocating for the comprehensive reform of the force, MOSOP said the unwholesome activities of most of the officers called for concern and were becoming an embarrassment to the country, adding that this tendency had drastically reduced the rating of the police in the eye the public.
The Media Adviser to MOSOP President, Bari-ara Kpalap, who condemned the unjustified, gruesome murder of Mr. David Legbara by Police Sergeant James Imhalu, demanded his immediate prosecution and payment of adequate compensation to the family of the deceased.
He told newsmen in Port Harcourt Monday that should the issue remained unattended to in 14 days, the Ogoni people would have no choice than to peacefully and non-violently protest the heinous killing.
“It is our position that the dastardly act has gone far beyond mere condemnation by the police hierarchy and it must thus match her public reaction with visibly genuine action. The Ogoni people, we must say, are keenly watching and would accept nothing less than justice not only being done but also seen to be done timeously,” he said.
Kpalap explained that the deceased, until his death, was a commercial bus driver and the only child of his parents and breadwinner of the family. Legbara, who hailed from Uegwere-Boue community in Khana Local Council of Rivers State, was mowed down in questionable circumstances at Whimpy Junction, Mile 4, Ikwerre Road, Port Harcourt last Friday, by Sergeant Imhalu, a mobile police officer attached to Kala Police Station also in Port Harcourt
MOSOP said the condition under which Legbara died was reminiscent of the past wherein a large number of Ogoni natives were gruesomely murdered in the course of extortion.
According to him, reports available to MOSOP had shown that the issue occasioning this latest death was extortion-related but seemingly masked otherwise.
