Authorities of Madonna University, Akpugo Campus, Enugu State, have dismissed as baseless and unfounded, allegations of students’ torture, saying the school remains one of the best places for effective learning and character.

Two engineering students (names withheld) who were recently suspended and later recalled by the school over alleged cult-related practices, gross misconduct and attack on the school’s Chief Security Officer (CSO), Mr. Okey Ogbonnaya, had accused the school authorities of torture.

They claimed the CSO picked them from their hostels inside the school compound late at night and brutalised them until they bled profusely, after which they were abandoned.

The affected students, who later reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest of administrator of the Akpugo campus of the school, Rev. Fr. Isaac Nginga, and the CSO in July this year, claimed that they spent several days at the hospital, treating their wounds.

But Rev. Fr. Nginga, debunked the claims by the students saying it lacked substance even as he accused the two students of severely breaching their rules of engagement.

He specifically said that while one of the students, who was admitted in 2010 to study civil engineering for five years was suspended in 2013 for one year, having pleaded guilty of gross misconduct before the university’s disciplinary panel, the other, who was admitted in 2009 and was supposed to have graduated last year, could not following his failure to clear his courses.

Upon the completion of the suspension, the duo returned to school in November, last year, to complete their programmes. Shortly after their return, however, a fracas broke out in January this year between two cult groups allegedly led by the recalled students.

The development led to their invitation and interrogation by the CSO, who said he resisted immense pressure from the affected students to recommend them to the disciplinary committee. They eventually appeared before the committee on February 6 to defend themselves.

Shortly after appearing before the committee, the duo sent a warning letter to CSO to withdraw the case before them or face the consequences.

Three days to the date of their summons, they tricked and attacked the CSO, inflicting severe injuries on him. He was hospitalised for days.

Recalling how it happened, the CSO said he got a call from an unknown number, claiming that some students of the school were somewhere in Garki, Awkunanaw in Enugu South local council, where they were purchasing Indian hemp for supply to students on campus. It added that one of them was even planning to enter the campus with a weapon.

This accusation by rev Nginga is baseless.why did the school authority took the student to portharcourt for treatment and also held them in custody and away from their parents? Why did the school authority seeked a bailout from the state high court while thwarted matter is still in the magistrate court?
This school should be shut down because most of the past students who graduated in that school have an ugly experience from their Cso.let justice prevail and the media should help in bringing this to reality.

If you guys knew what students and past students are subdued to in this terrible school, u won’t be posting this rubbish for that asylum, the school is a lie, they encourage morden slavery and I was a student of that useless institution before I graduated… Well what has a begin must surely come to an end, so guardian, if u guys like publish what u don’t know about because of money, it’s your reputation that’s at stake. Sharing a photo of students being happy after lectures.
We don’t use camera phones there, so how was the picture taken???
Go and investigate father Edeh and that school, we’ve been through a lot but outsiders won’t understand… Like the saying “who no go, Nono” only God and Buhari can save we the students of Madonna.

I’m seriously shaking my head for this school. You took them to your school’s teaching hospital but u didn’t torture them. So what did you take them to the hospital for? A doctor in your hospital has confirmed that one of them came with a broken jaw and the other one needs a surgery in Germany. It’s funny how you go to the media to deny this story. I guess you people have forgotten how you used to lock up suspected cultists for so many weeks without food and water and later in the presence of all the students in Okija flog and beat them till they are almost dead. Most of them were just victims. You didn’t even have any proof they were cultists. You are so lucky you are operating in a country like Nigeria. All the wrongs you have done and still doing to people’s children will catch up with you all soon. You maltreat people’s children all in the name of discipline. You treat students like dogs after their parents have paid so much for them to be there. Tread the path of honour and retrace your steps before its too late. Stop violating the rights of the students. Do not forget there are people that’ve finished from your school that are highly placed and have your ills and wrongs documented. Practice what you preach and treat human beings the way they should be treated. This is a call to NHRC and to civil society groups. The complaints against Madonna University and some other private universities is way too much. Do not allow this to be swept under the carpet like other complaints against them.

Madonna is just a terrible school, I was also a victim, expelled because I tried to defend my self and my sister from the assistant CSO ( osama) who tried to brake my leg with is motorcycle with 3 different attempt. A friend of mine was also suspended just because he stood up to defend me. A school that treats students like animals shuld be closed down.
It’s more annoying because most of our parents think Madonna is such a good school, Cus de hide under the Catholic Church , that even when their children complain about the school, they don’t listen until it’s very late. Madonna is not just a school
