THE Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BDEC) has rolled out plans to invest over N1 billion on network repairs and upgrade of facilities, the Chief State Officer, Mr. Albert Esenabhalu has disclosed.

Esenabhalu who spoke with reporters in Asaba yesterday said that the company has since engaged the services of NDPL Tata (India) and GUMCO (Nigeria) as technical partners in order to actualize the plan for better services.

He noted that a major transformation to ensure additional power from the company which services consumers in 1, 500 communities spread across Edo, Delta, Ondo and Ekiti States to the national grid has also commenced.

According to him, the essence of the clean-up business, which has commenced in Edo and Delta, was to un-bundle the privatization of the power sector, adding that the impact of the initiative will be felt from 2017.

The BEDC official added that the electricity company has embarked on premises and customers’ enumeration exercise, warning those on illegal consumption to desist or risk being dragged before the law.

He said: “It was clear to us that there was critical need to change things massively and dramatically. The conclusion of our findings was that customers were not being served though the public is expecting value for money. To assist the above, we have engaged the NDPL Tata (India) and GUMCO (Nigeria) as technical partners. We expect to feel the impact of this from 2017 when these new generation would have fully taken root.”
