PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has restated his zero tolerance for any form of irregularity or extortion from applicants in the coming recruitment into the police.

At a meeting yesterday with officials of the Ministry of Police Affairs and the Police Service Commission,(PSC) in the Presidential Villa, Buhari said that applicants having to pay bribes before being accepted into the police in the past was totally unacceptable.

The President told the officials that those in charge of recruitment and training in the Police must be above board and eschew every form of extortion and underhand dealing.

The President also directed the Inspector-General of Police to prune the number of policemen attached to dignitaries, and redeploy all policemen withdrawn from that role to regular police duties.

On the stagnation of policemen in terms of promotion, the President urged the PSC to review the current structure of the police, and make recommendations on how the problem can be solved to boost the morale of serving officers.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Police Affairs, Dr James Obiegbu had, in his briefing of the President, listed inadequate personnel, dwindling finances and non-rehabilitation of training schools as some of the challenges facing the Force.

The Chairman of the PSC, Mike Okiro, said that the country needs to have more than the 305,579 policemen and women which it has at present for effective policing.

He thanked President Buhari for approving the recruitment of 10,000 additional officers. Speaking to State House correspondents after the briefing of the President on the activities of the commission, Okiro said the shortage had come as a result of retirement, deaths and dismissal of some personnel.

Retirements, deaths and dismissals are routine and anticipated factors for strength decrease, ie, reduction in the total number. But because these factors do not constitute a significant decrease in the total strength, Mr Okiro ought have hit the nail on the head: there has not been a determined policy to boost the Police Nnumbers via a sustained recruitment programme. Ten thousand new recruits on an ad hoc basis is hardly the solution. To me, such an exercise should come up quarterly and run consistently for the next ten years. And even at that, police total number won’t hit the optimum, but would at least improve considerably.

PMB, Police authorities will not obey your order to stop collecting bribe before recruitment. The earlier order to stop collecting toll gate on the road has been largely ignored especially by Federal Highway Patrol. The Highway Patrol teams have devised a new way to fleece motorists. They are now ‘checking’ for APPLICATION FOR NUMBER PLATE. They will then look for flaws in the document processed by FRSC. If they feel that operatives of the FRSC made a mistake in processing the Application, pronto; you are to pay N7,000. They are smiling to the bank everyday. PMB. Please, stop them.

Exactly what PMB stated occurred to me at Ado-Ekiti along Iyin-ekiti road while some squad of federal highway patrol police officer stopped me and ask of my papers of which I gave it to one officer named Adekolure Benson with tag number 432530. After he has checked my car particulars he knew it’s completed he then asked of my driver license which I told him that I forgot it at home simply because I was rushing to meet up with the party I was going to attending at ode-ekiti but he didn’t listen to me and asked me to pay 7000 naira I told him I don’t haven’t any money to spear for the policemen and he delayed me and my brother from 4pm till 7pm on the 25th of july 2015 and I was forcefully to paid 2000naira because he insisted that if I don’t pay he won’t allow us to leave because he has my car particular and my PVC with him and we were still heading to osogbo that very night
Please accept my permission to dismiss this officer with 432530
