THE President of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF), Edward Pam, says the national team players and officials are not depressed over the Black Stallions’ inability to gain promotion to the Africa Rugby Division 1B at the just concluded Division 1C Cup in Zambia.

Nigeria was at the weekend banking on Zimbabwe to upset the hosts in the last game of the competition to gain promotion to Division 1B, but the Zambians won the game by 19 points to 12.

The Black Stallions had earlier lost to Zambia by 15 to eight points in their first match; beat the third ranked rugby-playing nation in Africa, Zimbabwe, by 34 points to 23. Speaking on Nigeria’s performance in Zambia, Pam noted that the team boxed itself into a tight corner after unexpectedly losing to Zambia, whom bookmakers thought was an easy ride on their way to gain promotion.

He, however, said the tournament enabled the technical committee of the federation to gain more experience on how to build the rugby team ahead of future challenges, adding that after two years of trying to assemble a credible national team, the Black Stallions have proved they are progressing by qualifying for the All Africa Games.

He commended CMB Building Maintenance and Investment Company Limited for sponsoring the national team, saying the company was responsible for the one-week camping exercise in Zambia before the tournament.

He said the sponsorship went a long way in helping the Fabian Juries led team to record a decent result in the championship, just as he called on Nigerians, corporate organizations to key into the vision of the NRFF by partnering with the federation through sponsorship of the of the national teams, grassroots and national competitions.
