NIM advocates greater women empowerment for sustainable development

To achieve sustainable development in the country, the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) has called for an urgent need to explore the potentials of Nigerian women towards leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship.

National President, Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) Dr. Nelson Uwaga stated this during the 2015 edition of Women in Management and Leadership Conference (WIMA).

According to him, Nigerian women have proven to be one of the best, they have not been found wanting in any area of endeavor ranging from the home front to academia, business, corporate world, boardroom and political space.

He pointed out that Nigerian women have never disappointed in positions of authority and they have shown that they are capable of managing human resources and materials with accountability, transparency, efficiency, effectiveness, equity, honesty and integrity in line with the value of the institute. “It is my honest belief that when women are deliberately empowered they will be in a better position to contribute to national development”, Uwaga said.

Explaining that the conference was organised to serve as a platform for women to brainstorm and proffer solutions to issues that directly affect them at the workplace and in the economy, Uwaga said that there is urgent need more than ever before to harness and unleash the potentials of women towards leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship in order to break the ceiling for women to aspire to become better achievers.

Experts have adjured that one sure way of empowering women and reducing gender inequality in today’s fast changing world, especially in a developing society like, is by getting more women educated and employed. Women education is therefore necessary for developing countries especially to; experience higher economic growth, reduce incidence of poverty, increase average wage, increase share of trade in gross domestic product, and improve health.
