Nasarawa Introduces Development Levy

IN his determination to ensure speedy development, Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa state, said his administration is to commence the implementation of development levy for all categories of civil servants in the state as a means of generating revenue for infrastructural development.

Al-makura stated this yesterday when he received the report of the transition appraisal committee in his office in Lafia. He lamented that the current situation where civil servants who constitute less than one per cent of the total population of the state drain the financial purse of the state is not only unfair to the remaining generality of the populace but also immoral.

“A situation where the state expends its entire allocation at the expense of 99 percent of the population is unacceptable. We as people must rationalise on how we can ensure the survival of each and every citizen of Nasarawa State,” the governor said.

“As a result of that, from now onwards, it is the responsibility of everyone who earns a living on the state resources to also plough back for commonwealth. Everyone that earns salary, whether in the state or in the local government councils, will henceforth pay development levy, which hitherto was left in the domain of contractors and suppliers.”
